The Kawaii Nest’s First Charity Donation + What To Do If You Find a Bat

Exciting news — The Kawaii Nest’s first charity donation!

The Kawaii Nest has made its very first official business donation, and we chose to support Bat Conservation & Rescue QLD (BCRQ) — a volunteer group that rescues, rehabilitates and releases flying foxes and microbats across the Greater Brisbane area and surrounding districts, including Ipswich, Logan, Redlands and Pine Rivers.

I’ve personally called their hotline over the years for several baby bats found with their deceased mums on powerlines or on the ground. They’ve always responded quickly and treated every animal with great care.

In the past few weeks alone, I’ve had to call in two babies, so it felt right to start here.

Here is a video I took of the little fella I found on the ground, I put a Coles bag over him to shield him from the sun while I waited for the rescuer to arrive. His noise is so cute!

And here is a photo of him with a dummy in and in his makeshift "Mum", which is like a cylindrical cloth as a body and with a fabric "wing" to enclose him.

What to do if you see a bat during daylight (on powerlines, fences, or on the ground)

I also want to share some bat-rescue information because most people are unsure on what to do when they see a bat in trouble or out in the daytime. I didn’t know the first time — I was hoping the first bat I found hanging on the powerlines was just sleeping or lost. When it was still there the next afternoon, that’s when I found BCRQ and reported it. That bat was a deceased female with a live baby tucked under her wing.

1. Don’t touch the bat.
For your safety and the bat’s. Only trained, rabies-vaccinated rescuers should handle bats.

2. Call the rescue hotline immediately:
📞 0488 228 134

3. Keep children and pets away.
Grounded bats are scared and vulnerable.

4. If the bat is on the ground
Place a box, basket or container over it without touching the bat. This keeps it calm until help arrives.

5. If the bat is on powerlines
Even if it looks deceased, there may be a live baby tucked under her wing. Call BCRQ right away.

6. If it’s caught in netting or a fence
Don’t cut it out.
You can gently drape a towel over the bat (without touching it) to reduce stress until rescuers arrive.

7. A bat alone during the day needs help.
If you see a bat sitting out in the open in daylight, it’s almost always in trouble.
