Beginners Guide to Junk Journaling
What is junk journaling?
Junk journaling is a paper based craft similar to scrapbooking, but it prioritises the use of more common place items. Junk journalers like to use things that they collect in their daily life, such as newspaper cuttings, tickets, food wrapping, receipts. These are then used alongside traditional craft items such as patterned paper, stickers and photos.

The effect is amazing. It has its own aesthetic, focusing on the beauty of everyday objects and leaning into the rustic and at time ‘junky’ nature of the source material. Nothing is off limits. It opens up a whole new world of craft supplies.
Why I love it so much?
I started my crafting life as a scrapbooker, using the 12 x 12 paper stock backings as the framework. At the time I loved it, but over time my style evolved to become a more organic expression. The experimentation with different formats, I found, provided more options to be creative. I also really like working out of a notebook or journal, as I can take it with me. It is also a nice keepsake and can be more functional if you also like to add notes and your own writings.
So how do I start?
Start with a memory, event or feeling you want to capture. Have a look at items that you already have – chances are your draws are already full of great items you can use. Paper bags and wrapping paper can be fun backgrounds. The next step is to layer. Glue down the things that you love, then add more. Add stickers, journal some notes on the side and embellish with stickers, gems or glitter. The collage method looks best when there are different textures on the page.

You can also experiment with the page itself, trying cutting it in half lengthways or add tabs on the side. You will quickly see your journal bursting to life. The thicker it gets – the more memories captured inside.
What should I include when junk journaling?
When I am out and about at my local café or checking out an exhibition I always keep an eye out for:
- Catalogues and programs from plays, art shows
- Napkins from restaurants
- Coasters
- Business cards – some of these look really cool
- Takeaway menus
- Scraps of paper from food wrapping (clean of course)

You can also print your own images and photos to add into the mix. Just have fun.
